Donald Trump is coming for Chicago.
Now that he’s “solved crime” in D.C. after a single murder-free week (one of five this year, but who’s counting?), Trump has set his sights on the Windy City.
And he’s bringing the same bag of lies and race-baiting nonsense he always does.
Let’s be clear: Crime in Chicago, like in most major American cities, is down, and was before Trump started bellowing about it. Homicides have dropped by 33 percent this year. Overall crime complaints? Down 14 percent. Those numbers aren’t partisan spin, but Trump isn’t interested in facts.
By spewing this toxic nonsense, Trump demonizes places with “Democrat” mayors and governors, stokes fears that divide cities from suburbs, provides cover for ICE raids, and falsely justifies sending armed National Guard troops into urban neighborhoods.
Trump is interested in drumming up fear to set the stage for his authoritarian theater.
This is just the kind of escalation signaled in a leaked memo obtained by The New Republic earlier this month, and we’re committed to exposing this racist fear campaign masquerading as “law and order.” But to keep doing that, we need your help.
Your donation funds the hard investigative work that holds the line when democracy is under assault. |
Every donation fuels the reporting needed to shine a light on authoritarian power plays like this one. For U.S.-based donors giving $100 or more, we’ll send you a TNR tote bag to carry the truth with you. |
The New Republic is holding power to account before these abuses become normalized, permanent, and even more dangerous.
This is not just about Chicago. Or D.C. Or Memphis. This is about every city Trump decides to demonize next.
Thank you for standing with us.
Sincerely,
Michael Tomasky, editor

The Windy City is set to be the next place the president intends to send an occupying army under the pretext of fighting crime.
