Dear Reader,

{{/if}}

Remember when January 20 was supposed to be "Liberation Day"? How’s that working out?

A hundred days into Trump’s second term, the stench of fascism is unmistakable—and entirely intentional. We’ve seen universities bullied, citizens investigated for political speech, legal residents jailed for speaking out about Palestine, and a 4-year-old with cancer deported without access to medication.

Meanwhile, Trump’s economic cure-all is collapsing under the weight of his own clown-show governance. His tariff tantrums are hammering small businesses, paralyzing industries, and setting the stage for a recession—with GDP tilting into the negatives. The only thing Trump has liberated Americans from is our financial stability.

This is not normal. This is not democracy. This is clown-show fascism: cruel where it counts, incompetent everywhere else.

This is America in crisis. And The New Republic is confronting it with full force. We’re documenting the authoritarian power grabs, the court-defying chaos, and the spineless normalization from mainstream media and corporate elites. But this kind of fearless, independent commentary takes resources.

We need to raise $30,000 to support our essential work—and we can’t do it without you.

Yes, I'll help!

Every donation, no matter the size, keeps independent journalism alive in the age of disinformation and disgrace. And if you give $100 or more, we’ll send you a free TNR tote bag to carry the message of fearless reporting with you wherever you go.

Help us pull the curtain back on Trump’s lies—and show America what real leadership looks like.

Thank you for standing with us.

Sincerely,

Michael Tomasky, editor

The Trump administration is a serious threat to democracy. They’re also laughably incompetent. But the result is no laughing matter.
