Dear Reader,

{{/if}}

President Trump told millions on Fox: “The radicals on the left are the problem.”

With few facts to go on in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, right-wing voices across the country are already calling for violent retribution, and Trump has basically given them the green light.

Stephen Miller has already labeled the Democratic Party a “domestic extremist organization,” Christopher Rufo and other MAGA voices are calling for Kash Patel’s FBI to step in, and Trump is fanning the flames by sending the message that anyone who can be blamed for Kirk’s death even speciously and pretextually is now subject to retribution by the full force of the government.

Some of Trump’s most prominent supporters are calling for open season on liberals and the left, and Trump is functionally saying, Go for it. The MAGA-captured American state has your back. We’re behind you all the way.

That’s the cheap logic of political violence: A single act is seized as license to attack innocent people who hold different views.

This moment demands the kind of clear, relentless reporting that The New Republic is known for. But we can’t do it without you.

Yes, I'll help!

Charlie Kirk’s murder has ignited the perennial online war over which “side” is more guilty of political violence, at a time when we’ve already seen so much bloodshed. Instead of even the slightest gesture of pulling the country together, Trump has more or less vowed to unleash the power of the American state on his perceived enemies.

If you agree that Trump and the MAGA movement are using this moment to escalate the dangers facing our country, please join us in this important campaign.

Every donation fuels the reporting needed to shine a light on authoritarian power plays like this one. For U.S.-based donors giving $100 or more, we’ll send you a TNR tote bag to carry the truth with you.

Thank you for standing with truth and against political violence.

Sincerely,

Michael Tomasky, editor

At a time when right-wing extremists are calling for open season on liberals and the left, the president of the United States just told them: Hey, go for it.
